The Legend of Ethel and Her Cats

The story goes that there was a lady called Ethel who lived in Ramsey Heights, in the Fens between Peterborough and Huntingdon. Ethel was very fond of cats, as you'd have to be if you had 597 of them.

Unfortunately, Ethel wasn't very rich. In fact she was so poor that eventually she couldn't afford to feed the cats. So the cats got hungrier and hungrier, and one day they got so hungry that they ate Ethel.

And to this day, if children in Ramsey Heights and nearby villages aren't perfectly behaved, they are sometimes warned that "Ethel's cats are hungry..."
